A reindeer literacy game I have planned for this upcoming week is called "Dasher's Reindeer Sort". {The phonics skill this week is /sh/!} The kids pull one ornament out of a box at a time. They read the /sh/ word on the ornament, then place the ornament into the correct reindeer bucket--"Begins with /sh/" or "Ends with /sh/". They will record their words on a little reindeer sort work mat. *I would love for my teacher friends out there to share any fun and "Christmasy" ideas for teaching /sh/!

When I teach digraphs, I like to make up tongue twisters with the kids. After reciting, the kids draw a picture to match the tongue twister. It makes them giggle everytime.

What a great idea...I'm also teaching the /sh/ digraph...along with /wh/ and /ph/...our new reading anthology bundled them all together...weird! Anyway...I also love the idea of creating tongue twisters and having the children draw the pictures...cute!
ReplyDeleteWrite words with the /sh/ digraph on snowflake cut outs. Write words from your sight word list also (one word on each snowflake). "Hide" them around the room. The students will read the word and write it on their sheet if it has the /sh/ sound in it. (I have a sheet if you want me to email it you, let me know)

ReplyDeleteThey are shatterproof--I found some great ones at Dollar Tree! I will try my best to get the workpage uploaded--just bear with me! I'm still getting the hang of PDFs and how to stick them on google docs! Thanks for the tongue twister idea! I will definitely use it!

ReplyDeleteThere is a great book called "Quiet, Santa!", also titled "Shhh!" It is perfect for the /sh/ digraph! I wrote "Shhh!" on a sentence strip & held it up every time it arose in the text so that the students could participate in the story.

There's also "Hurry, Santa!" "Careful, Santa!" & one more, I think, but "Quiet, Santa!" or "Shhh!" is the one you want.
