Bossy e was our class visitor the past couple of weeks! He came strutting into the room with his backwards cap, bossing around all the vowels...and KICKING them in the pants to make them say their own names! Oh no! What a bully! I don't know why I started this whole "kicking vowels in the pants" business, but it sticks with the kids, and they think its pretty hilarious. I just hope their 2nd grade teachers understand when they ask one of my students if they know the CVCe rule, and the kids say, "The e kicks the vowel in the pants!" Ha! Anyway, it has been fun reading words with bossy e, and I created a little mini packet (my first Teachers Pay Teachers venture) available for f-r-e-e if you'd like to download it! It comes with a silly story about Bossy e, a printable for creating a wanted poster, and a set of flash cards that have a real photo of bossy e on each!

We used the bossy e flash cards during guided reading, and sorted the bossy e words by vowel sounds.

This is such a great way to get the kids to remember the rule about bossy "e". I am a first grade teacher in VA and am loving your site! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! I have always taught it by saying the "e" is a "Magic e" because it makes the vowels say their own name!
ReplyDeleteNancy Fetzer, a reading specialist, has a similar tale about Bossy E. He yells so much at the vowels, he looses his voice and the vowels say their names.

I teach 3rd, I would love just the fact that my kids came to me already knowing the CVCe ~ no matter what they called it! I have downloaded it from TPT, much, much, much success...I just got my first deposit from the 1st quarter & I did the happy dance at 6 am!

ReplyDeleteLOL, I teach my kiddos Sneaky E sneaks up on the vowel and pinches the vowel. The vowel says his name! Pretty much the same concept as kicking in the pants. It does work though! Too bad we have to make that E such a bad guy though!

Bah ha!!! This literally made me laugh out loud. I've only ever explained to my kids that the e is silent and makes the vowels say their names. No wonder they never got it...they will now, I'm sure! Thanks for sharing and idea AND a laugh. :)

Sara, I just found it. I have always told my first graders that the e is so bossy - it reaches across one sound and bonks the vowels on their head telling them to "say their own name!" ... kicking...bonking....LOL such a violent little e.
