Candy Land: Sight Word Edition!

There are so many fun games out there to teach sight words, but this might just be my new favorite! I mean, who doesn't love Candy Land? As soon as I put this game out in the classroom, the kids instantly seemed excited! To make Candy Land: Sight Word Edition, I found the game on sale at Target for super cheap (only $5!) then typed up a list of Dolch words, cut them apart, and taped the words to the color cards with clear packing tape! The game is played just like regular old Candy Land, but instead of just moving to the color pictured on the card, the kids will have to read the word on the card before moving to the color space on the board. If they read the word incorrectly, they would not be able to move to the color pictured on the card. Easy! I can't wait to put the game in stations this week! {Parents...this would also be a great game for home practice. If you notice your child is missing several words on the sight word assessments, you can use the list sent home and make your own version especially for your child!}

AWESOME! Guess what I will be doing today with my kids old games. They get so mad when I "teacher" their toys and then take them to my classroom. It is no fun being a teachers child. :)

I did this last week! The kids LOVED it. I also did an addition/subtration one where they had to find the answers on the board.

Isn't it wonderful to make fun games into educational ones! I love this idea, and in fact love anything that encourages kids to learn and play at the same time!

Cute idea! I found Candyland for $4.99 at Toys R Us... and it had a mail in rebate too! With the rebate, the total came to $2.99 for the game! They also had Chutes and Ladders marked down to the same price if anybody is interested. I'm thinking that it could be easily adapted into an addition and subtraction game. :) Happy shopping everyone!

Check out this teacher's page. She has @ 25 games made for the Candy Land game board. There are 4 freebies - one is a game and the other three are the labels for all of the games she has made.

I have fond memories of Candyland- I love how you adapted it to use it for a sight word game. We used it in our Reading summer post on sight word games @ theclassroomcreative, it was a perfect match! Enjoy your summer, Karen & Nicolette

Thank you for sharing your idea. I "pinned" it and many have repinned from me. I got a game at a garage sale for 50cents and plan to make it for my Kdg Title I students.

did you see the Cake Boss episode where Buddy made a big CandyLand cake for a new candy store? It was like the coolest cake ever! This is a great idea. Even though I teach in a middle school self-contained SPED class, my kiddos still love the candy land game...my brain is spinning with all the ways I can differentiate this...Yummy...
